Building a ranking of markets based on music retail & digital value

We've built country rankings to improve user experience and productivity on the platform.

They can be found on the song page - charts cumulative table tab - or in song or artists notifications settings.

These rankings allow us to add three 'sticky' groups at the top of specific dropdown menus. With country rankings, the user can sort data more specifically in All countries, the Top 25, and the Top 50.

Here is how they look:

If you are not yet a customer and want to try it out, you can explore it for free on Tones and I's profile.

Method

To match the reality of the music industry, rather than a straightforward GDP ranking, we've sorted the groups using three indexes based on the information available per country:

  • When the information was available: by music retail value

  • If there was no data for music retail value: by digital music retail value

  • When no other information was available: by GDP

Finally, because most charts have a global (or worldwide) ranking, we have placed it as the #1 market in all categories.
